The Chapel Hill and Hillsborough hospitalist schedule can be found at https://s2.lightning-bolt.com/Login.aspx.

Prerequisites:

  • 1) Chiefs & Independent Fellows -Credentialing and licensing must be complete & attend a moonlighting orientation by WebEx.
  • 2) GME Fellows - Appropriate approval to moonlight must be obtained on a yearly basis through the GME office. Confirmation of approval should be sent to Sharon Baker at [email protected]. Attend a moonlighting orientation by WebEx. Receive notification that you may pick up shifts.
  • 3) Hospitalists -May pick up shifts once notification is received that the published schedule has been made final.
  • 4) All Chiefs, Fellows and Hospitalists should have a current ACLS certification to pick up shifts at Hillsborough. Please send a copy of your certification to Sharon Baker at [email protected].

Additional Note for Hillsborough:

  • 1) There is no nighttime in-house intensivist or anesthesia coverage in Hillsborough. Anesthesia is on call 24/7 from home, but it may take up to an hour or more to arrive. ICU support is available by phone from the main campus. Moonlighters must feel comfortable with ICU level care and running codes. Up to date ACLS certification is required. All respiratory therapists at Hillsborough are trained to perform intubations and the emergency room physician is available as backup.

The process:

  • 1) To pick up shifts you will need an account with Lightning Bolt. Sharon will add you to this system and Lightning Bolt will send you an email to set up your password. You may then login with your username and password.
  • 2) For each new academic year (beginning in July) you may pick up shifts once appropriate approval has been received for that year.
  • 3) The picking up and trading of shifts with other moonlighters or hospitalists will be done in Lightning Bolt by you. Follow the instructions in the 'UNC Lightning Bolt Instructions' form to trade or pick up shifts. You will receive this once your account has been created.
  • 4) Important note…If you are unable to cover a shift that you have picked up, you are responsible for finding coverage for this shift and are responsible to cover it until other coverage is found. A list of approved moonlighters for academic year 2026 is housed on the Hospitalist SharePoint site.

Your first moonlighting shift:

Chapel Hill

  • 1) Sign-out takes place at 7 pm (for Night Two), 9 pm (for Night One) & 7am in the Hospital Medicine office located on 9 th floor of the Bedtower, Room BT9028. The code for the keypad lock on the door is 4-1-1.
  • 2) The 'Night One' call room is located on the 4 th floor of patient support tower (building directly behind Children's). The hallway to the suite is across from the elevator bank between the transplant clinic and the OR waiting room. The suite # is E4200. Inside the suite the room on the right is the Night One call room. The code for this door is 4-1-1. We try to keep the door to the suite unlocked, but if you find it locked there is a key on the desk just inside the hospitalist administrative office on the 9 th floor of Bedtower. When you leave in the morning, please leave the suite door unlocked.
  • 3) The 'Night Two' call room is located on the 3 rd floor on the Anderson side of Dialysis (E3003). The code for this door is 4-1-1.
  • 4) We have an ED workroom in Admin Suite #NSB 0624 on the left side of the ED Basement. Once inside we are the office that is straight back #NSB 0620. The code for that door is 4-1-1.
  • 5) Please ask the 'Day/Evening' or other 'Night' physician to familiarize you with the service and what is required of our moonlighters. Ask that they show you how to use the paging system and ' Cross Cover ' forms (for Night Two).

Hillsborough

  • 1) Sign out takes place in the Hospital Medicine office located on the 2 nd floor of Bed Tower (CCU), room HBT 2-2009. Please use door code 4-1-1-#. Please keep this door closed . The call room is located on the same floor before the entrance of the CCU unit, room HBT 2-1019, with door code 1-4-4-#.
  • 2) At 9pm, 2 nd Shift signs out to Night Shift. At 7am, Night Shift signs out to HBC.
  • 3) The day or evening physician will help familiarize you to the service and what is required of our moonlighters. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first shift. They will show you how to create a patient list, use the paging system, where to find the call room, pager (if needed) and Cross cover Forms.
  • a. Forward all Hillsborough virtual pagers to yourself.
  • b. New admissions: 123-7430
  • c. Team C: 123-4444
  • d. Team D: 123-4441
  • e. Team CARES: 123-4442

Date you may moonlight through:

Please see the information listed below to know the date you may moonlight through in AY25.

  • 1) Chiefs and Fellows who are employed through the university and whose fellowship ends in June, your last day to moonlight is June 5 th .
  • 2) Fellows who are currently university employed and who will be switching over to being hospital employed at the end of June, your last day to moonlight is June 5 th .
  • 3) Fellows whose fellowships/employments are not ending may continue to moonlight through June 30 th .
  • 4) Fellows who are employed through the hospital whose fellowships are ending may continue to moonlight through June 20 th .

  • 1) Chiefs & Fellows -Service/Shift responsibilities are on the Hospitalist SharePoint Site. You can also click on a physician ' s name on our schedule and a brief description of the assignment will be on the pop-up window under Assignment Information.
  • a. CH Swing (2p-12a) $1200
  • b. CH Night 1 (9p-7a) $1700
  • c. CH Night 2 (7p-7a) $1700
  • d. HB 2 nd (11a-9p) $1200
  • e. HB Night (9p-7a) $1700

Rounding Services:

  • f. CH Dogwood MD - Chiefs & Credentialed Physicians Only (7a-5p) $1200
  • g. CH Magnolia MD - Chiefs & Credentialed Physicians Only (7a-5p) $1200
  • h. CH Cedar MD - Chiefs & Credentialed Physicians Only (7a-5p) $1200
  • i. CH Pine MD - Chiefs & Credentialed Physicians Only (7a-5p) $1200
  • j. HB HBC - Chiefs & Credentialed Physicians Only (7a-5p) $1200
  • k. Holiday Pay Rate (Designated holidays at end of the policy)
  • a) For shifts that are normally $1,200 (day, 2nds, evening) the holiday rate will be $1,700.
  • b) For shifts that are normally $1,700 (nights) the holiday rate will be $2,300.
  • l. Payment date for the shifts you cover is:
  • a) University employees -payment is made at the end of the month following the one you worked. Ex. If you cover a shift in March, payment will be included in your check at the end of April.
  • b) Hospital employees -Payment dates are listed on the payment compensation form that you are required to fill out . You need to sign it along with the program director. Also, don't forget to make sure your times on the form match what you entered in MedHub, or it could delay payment.
  • 2) Hospitalists
  • a. All Hospitalist Shifts (all hours) - $1300 total
  • b. Holiday Pay Rate
  • i. All Hospitalist Shifts on designated holidays (all hours) - $1800 total
  • c. Hospitalists and Attending physicians -payment is made quarterly. Jul-Sep shifts are paid at the end of October. Oct-Dec shifts are paid at the end of January. Jan-Mar shifts are paid at the end of April. Apr-Jun shifts are paid at the end of July.
  • 3) Designated Holidays for 'Holiday Pay . ' Holiday pay is only for the specific shifts on the specific holidays listed below. PLEASE NOTE: These DO NOT necessarily match the dates displayed as holidays in Lightning Bolt.
